BALING, 14 Jan 2009: More than 1,000 people in Baling and Sik districts today staged a peaceful demonstration against Israeli atrocities on Palestinians.
Organising committee chairperson Mohamad Khairul Azhar Abdullah urged the government to take proactive measures to put the message across.
He urged the Islamic Affairs Department (Jakim) to withdraw halal certification given to companies with links to Israel and the United States.
“The move will stop Muslims from buying products from the two countries. People of all races should boycott American goods to apply pressure on the country,” he added.
The demonstrators also carried slogans and burned an effigy of out-going US President George W. Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
The organisers distributed over 1,000 leaflets calling on the people to boycott American products as a show of protest.
A fund in aid of Palestinians was also launched. — Bernama
