KUALA TERENGGANU, 19 March 2009: PAS is to announce its candidate for the Bukit Gantang parliamentary by-election in Perak on Monday, PAS election director Datuk Mustafa Ali said today.
He said the name of the candidate would be announced by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
“We will hold a meeting on Monday and announce the name of the candidate at night,” he said at the Terengganu PAS Liaison Committee office, here.
The Bukit Gantang seat fell vacant following the death of the MP, Roslan Shaharum of PAS, on 9 Feb. Nomination for the by-election is on 29 March and polling on 7 April.
The Barisan Nasional (BN) has named Ismail Saffian, 49, the former Bukit Gantang Umno information chief, as its candidate for the by-election.
Mustafa, who is Terengganu PAS commissioner, said the names of four local people had been proposed as the PAS candidate.
He said PAS was confident of retaining the seat though it expected a tough fight from the BN candidate.
“From the information I have received, the PAS election machinery is running smoothly. There is minor improvement to be made before the by-election,” he said. — Bernama
