KUALA LUMPUR, 3 June 2009: The top leadership of PAS never had any intention or made any plans to join Umno or Barisan Nasional (BN), said PAS deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa.
Nasharudin, who will be defending his post at the party’s election during PAS’s muktamar (general assembly) over the next few days, said he believed PAS Youth members were with the top leadership on this matter (not joining Umno or BN).
“I wish to stress that we will not waver in our struggle though the methods may change,” he said when opening PAS Youth’s 50th general assembly at the party’s headquarters in Taman Melewar near here tonight.
The Member of Parliament for Bachok, who is seen as representing the ulama (Islamic scholars) group in the party, is being challenged by two vice-presidents, namely Datuk Husam Musa and Mohamad Sabu. The duo are said to be from the “Erdogan” faction and have more liberal views.
Nasharudin had been previously linked to some leaders of the party who were reported to have held talks with former Umno president Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, about forming unity governments in certain states after the last general election, which saw the BN losing five states and its two-thirds majority in Parliament. — Bernama
