IPOH, 14 Aug 2008: PAS is taking the careful approach in its talks or dialogues with Umno, says the party’s Dewan Muslimat (women’s wing) chief, Nuridah Mohd Salleh.
She said PAS was willing to meet with Umno, its traditional rival, but Umno needed to be sincere in the struggle for the Malays and Islam.
“PAS welcomes invitations for discussions with Umno and is willing to listen to its aspirations…. [but] PAS has learnt a lot from the political shenanigans and its bitter experience when it was in the BN in the early 1970s.”
She said this in her policy speech at the 48th PAS women’s assembly, which was opened by party vice-president Mohamad Sabu here today.
Nuridah added that the PAS-Umno discussions that had taken place so far were in line with the views of Muslim non-governmental organisations that met in Johor after the last general election, which, among others, resolved that Muslim-based parties unite in the interest of the Malays and Islam. – Bernama
