PENANG, 29 APRIL 2009: Penang PAS Youth reiterated its intention to field a candidate for the Penanti state assembly by-election on 31 May, although Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) had already named its candidate.
Penang PAS Youth chief Mohd Hafiz Mohd Nordin said a meeting would be held with PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang soon, and any decision made by the president would be unanimously accepted.
“There is a request from the grassroots urging the party to recapture the seat, and the Youth already have a candidate,” Hafiz said here today.
He was commenting on the announcement made by PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim regarding a candidate for Penanti. Yesterday, Penang PKR deputy chief Mansor Othman, 56, was announced as PKR’s candidate to contest the Penanti state seat.
Hafiz said as an opposition made up of a coalition of three parties, PAS, PKR and the DAP, there should have been a discussion among the three and not decisions made by one party.
He added that no such discussion had been held, and even if Anwar opposed PAS Youth’s decision to contest, there would be no change in PAS Youth’s stand.
The Penanti seat fell vacant after former Penang Deputy Chief Minister 1, Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin, resigned on 16 April. — Bernama
