IPOH, 9 Dec 2008: Police detained 45 passengers of a bus, including Sungai Siput Member of Parliament Dr D Jeyakumar, who were travelling from the north to the city during a roadblock at the Kuala Kangsar Toll Plaza, today.
Perak Police Chief, Datuk Zulkefli Abdullah, said they were all taken to the Kuala Kangsar Police Station for investigation for obstructing police personnel who were carrying out checks at the Toll Plaza at 1pm.
“They did not cooperate and raised a commotion when police asked for their identity cards and refused to state their reasons for coming here,” he said when contacted at his office today.
However, 40 of the passengers had been released after police recorded their statements while the other five, including Jeyakumar, were still detained for investigation,” he said.
They were all believed to be linked to the ‘Oppressed People Network’ (Jerit) who are campaigning from the north to the south of peninsular Malaysia to demand for political reforms.
They are being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants from discharging their duty. — Bernama
