KUALA LUMPUR, 17 Jan 2009: The Transport Ministry is studying a proposal to end express bus service at midnight to avoid the loss of many lives on the road.
Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the propposal made by the Road Safety Department (JKJR) and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (Miros) was made as drivers were usually tired at night despite having adequate rest.
“The proposal is not aimed at burdening bus operators but for the safety of passengers who make express buses their main mode of transportation,” he said after presenting donations to 200 single mothers in conjunction with Chinese New Year here today.
However, the ministry was still waiting for feedback from express bus operators and the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) on the proposal.
Ong also said agencies under the ministry were speeding up the delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians trapped in Gaza. — Bernama
