IPOH, 21 Oct 2008: The number of flood evacuees in several villages in Bukit Merah, about 120km from here, rose to 475 this morning, from 409 yesterday.
A Kerian district police operations room spokesperson said the latest victims were from Kampung Padang Lalang, Kampung Parit Jawa and Kampung Batu 40, Jalan Keretapi.
He said the villages were still under 0.5m to 1m of water from the Tasek Bukit Merah dam following three days of rain.
Alor Pongsu state assemblyperson Sham Mat Sahat said this was the second evacuation in two months due to flash floods caused by the release of water from the dam which had breached the danger level.
This time the situation was compounded by the three days of incessant rain and even villages which were not flooded previously were inundated, he said. — Bernama
