SHAH ALAM, 6 May 2009: The Selangor government will take over land in several areas in Kg Bukit Belimbing and Kg Kuantan to protect the firefly sanctuary in Kuala Selangor.
Selangor executive councillor Elizabeth Wong the takeover involved agriculture land on the banks of the Sungai Selangor and once completed, a buffer zone would be established to protect the sanctuary, which is a major tourist attraction in the state.
If the action was not taken the firefly colonies in the area risked being wiped out, she told a press conference after the weekly state executive council meeting here today.
She added that a special fund would be launched soon to help preserve the sanctuary. — Bernama
