KUALA LUMPUR, 28 March 2009: Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has vowed to unite the movement and take women issues to the mainstream.
She said that the struggle, however, would not be successful without the support of the movement’s new leadership and all Umno members.
Shahrizat admitted that she inherited a strong legacy from the movement’s former chief Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz who had led Wanita Umno for so long.
“The responsibility is heavy and it gets even heavier once we start shouldering it,” she said in her winding-up speech on behalf of the movement on the final day of the Umno General Assembly here today.
She said that there might be doubts about her ability to lead the movement but with the support of members, she was confident that Wanita Umno would continue to be strong.
“God willing, with the support of the vice-chief and executive committee members, we shall move ahead and chart a new era in the country’s political arena,” she said.
She also thanked the party’s previous leaders whom she said had taught her invaluable lessons about being brave and strong.
Among the leaders, she said, were former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Rafidah.— Bernama
