MALAYSIA’S 52nd anniversary of independence is upon us. 2009 has thus far already been tumultuous for our nation, with political infighting, rising criminality, mysterious deaths in custody, delayed whippings, and by-elections galore.
We’ve also seen crowds running in the face of teargas canisters. State assemblypersons under a tree, in full regalia. Clandestine camera phone stills of public figures. A body lying sprawled on a Shah Alam roof. The list could go on, especially since the year has yet to end.
To commemorate Merdeka, The Nut Graph has put together a modest essay of visuals, an anthology of signs of Malaysian times.

You could add a picture of those orange and white striped sticks jutting out at traffic light junctions and where u-turns are not permitted.
Then you could have another picture of them when they’re flattened.
