SIS condemns rape threat

By Sisters in Islam

September 8, 2009

SISTERS in Islam (SIS) urges the police to take action against the individual(s) who threatened to rape Batu Tiga state representative Rodziah Ismail during the chaotic dialogue between the Selangor government and the residents of Section 23, Shah Alam, on the issue of relocating the Hindu temple to the area.

SIS condemns the incident as this is clearly a case of intimidation and threat to harm a woman politician through gender-based violence. It is appalling that we have lost the ability to engage rationally, civilly and peacefully to resolve a problem.

The Qur’an has given us explicit guidance on how to handle differences: “use wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious.”

It is a disgrace to the community that such threats are made in the name of race and religion. Action must be taken against the hotheads in this dispute to prevent a downward spiral into possible conflict and violence.
