Asam Pedas oleh Norhayati Kaprawi | May 5, 2014 3 Comments

Inequality in the name of Islam

Shape of a Pocket by Jacqueline Ann Surin | July 15, 2013 4 Comments

THE problem with the Administration of the Religion of Islam (Federal Territories) Bill 2013 wasn’t just that it was “unfair” to non-Muslims or controversial. The reason it has no place in Malaysia is that the bill entrenches inequalities and does so in the name of Islam.

Could hudud be a reality?

By Ding Jo-Ann | May 4, 2013 8 Comments

The BN attacks on PAS’s hudud agenda involve scaremongering of the worst kind. BN’s alarmist politics aside, can hudud law actually become a reality for Malaysians? And how likely is it that it will be implemented in the near future?

Voting for an “Islamic state”

Shape of a Pocket by Jacqueline Ann Surin | October 29, 2012 15 Comments

According to MCA, a vote for DAP equals a vote for PAS equals a vote for an Islamic state and hudud. Is there truth to any of the charges and predictions MCA is making? And are they being completely honest about what the Umno-led Barisan Nasional itself has been responsible for?

Religious raids: Can they or can’t they?

By Ding Jo-Ann | June 11, 2012 7 Comments

CAN religious authorities like Jawi and Jais raid companies, confiscate books and detain Muslims for publishing and selling a book that is deemed a threat to Muslims in Malaysia? What laws empower religious state authorities to act in the way they have over Irshad Manji’s book? And what laws protect citizens and companies from arbitrary action?

The arbitrariness of moral policing

By Shanon Shah | June 18, 2010 12 Comments

CRITICISMS towards moral policing in Malaysia are nothing new. Back in 2005, the Federal Territories Islamic Department came under fire after its infamous raid of Kuala Lumpur’s Zouk nightclub. After the Muslim detainees’ claims of sexual harassment and other abuse by religious enforcers, the government sought to curb moral policing, in rhetoric at least. In […]

By Ding Jo-Ann | May 27, 2010 23 Comments

Can non-Muslims practise in the syariah courts?LAWYER Victoria Jayaseelee Martin made headlines in mid May with her quest to be admitted as a syariah lawyer in the Federal Territory. The Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council had refused admission to Martin because she was not a Muslim. On 14 May 2010, she was granted leave to have […]
