KUALA LUMPUR, 3 Oct 2008: Datuk Tan Lian Hoe has been returned unopposed as the Wanita Gerakan chief after nominations for the women’s wing closed at the party headquarters here at noon today.
However, the deputy chief’s position will see a straight fight between Penang Wanita chief Ng Siew Lai and Ong Kim Suan.
The post of vice-chief will see a four-corner fight between Negeri Sembilan Wanita chief Chin Nyuk Chin, Malacca Wanita head Yong Fuie Moy, Kedah Wanita head Eng Gaik Hong and Selangor Wanita head Azmar Md Ilias.
Nineteen candidates will be vying for the 18 seats on the national Wanita committee at the elections on 10 Oct.
Tan told reporters that she would focus on strengthening the party after the elections and raise the status of women through various activities.
She said her post came with a heavy responsibility to bring the women’s wing to greater heights.
Tan, who also heads the women’s wing in Perak, has been the Wanita head since 2005 when she won the post by defeating the Kuala Lumpur Wanita head Surin Leong Soo Tong, with a 218-vote majority in the elections. — Bernama
