PENANG, 19 Oct 2008: Former Gerakan deputy secretary-general Teng Chang Yeow has been appointed to replace Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye as the party secretary-general.
Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, in a statement issued here today, said Teng’s appointment was made at the party’s central committee meeting yesterday.
He said the meeting, the first after last week’s party elections, also appointed Chia one of the party vice presidents.
“He (Chia) was not involved in this year’s (party) elections. The five vice-president posts can be appointed by the central committee,” he added.
Koh said on the advice of the president, the secretary-general could appoint three deputies, one of whom should be a member of the central committee, and a treasurer.
He said the meeting also agreed that more activities should be carried out to get more people from various races to join the party. — Bernama
