KUALA LUMPUR, 22 Sept 2008: Gua Musang Umno chief Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said today that he is confident of garnering enough nominations to contest the president’s post at Umno’s polls in December.
The Member of Parliament for Gua Musang said he decided to enter the fray after getting feedback and support from the grassroots.
“I cannot tell what my strategy is now as it will jeopardise my chances. God willing, I will get the nominations,” he said at a dialogue session with political bloggers at his residence here. The session was also attended by mainstream journalists.
Tengku Razaleigh more popularly known as Ku Li went for the post in 1987 but lost to incumbent Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad by a slim 43 votes.
The incumbent this time is Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Under the party’s quota system he needs a minimum of 30% of Umno’s 191 divisions to nominate him to be eligible to contest (the presidency). – Bernama
