KUALA LUMPUR, 26 March 2009: Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s proposal that Umno set a maximum term for office-bearers could reduce the number of contenders, said vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.
He said this could lessen tension due to rivalry among aspiring candidates, thus hindering slander and allegations among them.
“If there is a maximum term in placed, let’s say two terms, this could prevent contests involving far too many candidates, as some could wait for a longer period to contest.
“Since there is no time limit at the moment, it has stirred up tension and eventually waste a lot of time,” he told reporters here today.
The Prime Minister today suggested that Umno consider setting a maximum term for its office-bearers as one of the measures to strengthen the party.
Asked whether he would offer himself to contest in the next party elections, Mohd Ali said he had not made any decision yet.
“I am still highly spirited to serve the party. So I don’t want to comment on the matter again,” he said. — Bernama
