KUALA LUMPUR, 18 Feb 2009: Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed said the highway concession agreement does not specify that 25% of the toll collection is meant for maintenance work.
He however said the government could however use its power to issue a notice to the concession company to use the maintenance bond if they had failed to maintain the highways.
Mohd Zin told Dewan Rakyat the government, through the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) has the right to monitor concession companies to ensure that the highways are maintained.
“The monitoring is based on the Expressway Maintenance System — Civil Works, Guideline and Manual and other guidelines that the companies have to comply,” he said when replying to a question by Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi (BN-Batu Pahat) in parliament today.
Mohd Puad wanted to know to what extend did concession companies comply with the “condition” that 25% of the toll collection be used for maintenance and whether the government has the right to monitor and act against errant companies. — Bernama
