PUTRAJAYA, 5 Nov 2008: Umno will be stronger if its membership is well represented by a cross section of the society like it used to, said its information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib.
He said efforts must be made to woo bumiputeras from various groups to join the party.
“We used to have teachers, imams, village heads, reporters, businessmen, smallholders, fishermen, literary advocates, former civil servants, philanthropists, artistes and sportsmen as members during the formative years.
“If we do not attract these groups and Umno continues to be dominated by certain groups, the people will not be keen to join the party,” he told reporters here today.
Commenting on a newspaper report that Umno is dominated by contractors, he said it was misleading but such perception could be detrimental to the party if it was not corrected.
“We have to rekindle the spirit of 1946 if we want Umno to be the bastion of the Malays in the country,” he said. — Bernama
