Umno Puteri, Youth and Wanita poll results (Updated 11.51pm)

(Updated 11:51pm, 25 March 2009)

KUALA LUMPUR, 25 March 2009: Khairy Jamaluddin has become the new Youth chief of Umno.

The 33-year-old garnered 304 votes while Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo collected 254 votes and Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir 232 votes in a closely-contested race.

Shouts of “rasuah” were heard when news of Khairy’s win was announced. A minor scuffle also broke out between rival supporters amid loud boos. Police were on hand to try and calm the crowd down.

While Khairy was delivering his acceptance speech in the hall, rival supporters continued to chant “rasuah” and “penipu” outside the hall. Police had to make a human chain barrier to prevent the protestors from entering the hall.

Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil earlier won the post of Wanita chief with 507 votes, beating long-time incumbent Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz who only garnered 280 votes.

Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rahsid Shirlin also made it as the new Puteri Umno chief, with Shahanim Mohammad Yusoff winning the deputy’s post.
