KUALA LUMPUR, 23 Oct 2008: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today said Umno’s disciplinary committee would be announcing several measures to curb money politics in the party very soon.
He said Umno had left it to the committee chaired by Tengku Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Rithauddeen Ismail to take the necessary action against members who indulged in money politics.
“The party president has met Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen to ask the committee to come down hard on those dabbling in money politics in the run up to Umno’s polls in March next year,” he told reporters after launching The Malaysian Savings Sales 2008 at The Gardens in Mid Valley, Bangsar.
Najib was asked about party efforts to tackle the matter because a number of people had said money politics was being practised in the ongoing branch and division meetings.
He also said that so far, there was no change in date as to the March 2009 party polls, although some quarters had argued that with nominations closing on 9 Nov 2008, the campaign period was far too long. — Bernama
