MALACCA, 4 Sept 2009: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has proposed that the Internal Security Act (ISA) detention order be looked into by the court or an independent body and not by the home minister.
He said those arrested under the act could seek justice through the proposed mechanism.
The move would also ensure that the home minister would not be seen as making decisions on ISA detentions based on political consideration, he told reporters after attending the breaking of fast organised by the movement here last night.
He was asked to comment on the statement by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein that the amendment to the ISA would be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat in October subject to input received.
Hishammuddin was also reported as saying that the government was still open to suggestions on the proposed amendment.
Khairy said the Umno Youth would hand over a memorandum to Hishammuddin next week containing suggestions on what needed to be amended.
“We will also suggest that the 60-day police detention period be shortened,” he said. — Bernama
