Umno’s new leadership (Updated 12:38am)

[get_post_meta single=1 key="byline"] | March 26, 2009 Leave a Comment

Updated 12:38am, 27 March 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, 26 March 2009:  Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin garnered 1,575 votes against Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib’s 916 to become Umno’s new deputy president.

The three new vice-president posts were won by Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (1,592), Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein (1,515) and Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (1,445).

Both Muhyiddin and Muhammad were in a straight fight for the coveted position. Traditionally, the Umno deputy president becomes Malaysia’s deputy prime minister. As of 10pm, Muhammad’s supporters at the Putra World Trade Centre were looking dejected.

The contest was originally a three-cornered one but Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam was barred from contesting after his agents were found guilty of money politics.

In the race for the Umno supreme council seats, several big names failed to make the cut, including Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Ohtman and Domestic Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad.

Also falling by the wayside was four menteris besar: Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman (Johor), Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (Negeri Sembilan), Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu Abdullah (Perlis) and Datuk Adnan Yaakub (Pahang).
