Woman claims trial to injuring maid

June 18, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR, 18 June 2009: A single mother pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to two counts of causing grievous hurt to Indonesian maid Siti Hajar Sadli using hot water and a hammer.

Hau Yuan Tyng, 43, also claimed trial to another charge of injuring the woman with a pair of scissors.

The offences were allegedly committed at Hau’s condomonium unit in Mont Kiara here.

According to the charge sheet, she injured the 33-year-old maid using hot water between 11am and 8pm on 7 June; with a hammer in February, and scissors in June.

The first two counts of causing grievous hurt under Section 326 of the Penal Code carry a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine or whipping, while the penalty for the third charge under Section 324 is up to three years’ imprisonment or a fine or whipping or any two.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Keng Fatt asked the court to impose RM10,000 bail on Hau for each of the first two charges and RM5,000 for the third.

Defence counsel M Manoharan, however, argued that RM25,000 was too high for his client, who is a single mother and has two children aged 11 and 12 years. He told the court that Hau’s younger child is disabled and needs round-the-clock assistance and observation.

Judge SM Komathy Suppiah fixed the bail at RM15,000 with one surety and ordered Hau to report to the Mont Kiara police station once a month.

She also fixed 22 July for re-mention. — Bernama

Why does the “Using and abusing Indonesians” link lead to a login webpage?

    Editor’s note:
Thanks for pointing that out. It has been fixed.
